Extrusion blow moulding has become more economical with the application of DRYWATER

DryWater from Fasti – drastic reduction of cooling times in the extrusion blow moulding process and increase in production of up to 30%

Kufstein (A), December 15, 2006: Refrigeration specialist Fasti has developed at new cooling concept for its customers in the blow moulding industry. A chilled mixture of water and air (also called “saturated steam) is being applied in the process. This saturated steam mixture is extremely capable of removing heat from the blown part. Quality also improves – the micro particular structure of the steam creates a very smooth surface on the inside of the blown product. Fasti is calling this innovative process for specifically intensive and fast removal of heat “DryWater” or CAC Dry Water – Compressed Air Chiller Dry Water.

The CAC-units, which have been sold hundreds of times to customers all over the world, operates with chilled compressed air alone, while the CAC DryWater is designed for the use of saturated steam, which is being cooled to a temperature of +3ºC. The air component consists of compressed air which is saturated 100% with water. The mixing and dosing process in the CAC-unit allows to produce containers and parts in the extrusion blow moulding process, with much higher efficiency. The saturated steam or mist does not remain on the part and, therefore, does not have to be removed subsequently – this is called the “Dry Water effect”. Depending on extruder capacity and the part configuration, such as volume and wall thickness, production increases of 10 to 30% are achievable.

Extrusion blow moulding – a remarkably improved production method

DryWater is a saturated mist, which is being injected into the part to be blown. In this process the water particles dissolved in the air react with the heat radiating from the product. In preparation for the process the CAC-unit moves the process air through a heat exchanger. This operation continues until a saturation level of 100% has been reached. The steam, now heavily loaded with water molecules, is now available for the blowing process in a selectable temperature range of +2 to +5°C.

A pronounced increase in productivity

The blown product in the DryWater process is only touched by moisture, but remains dry. The micro particular structure of the injected mist does not only avoid damage to the surface structure, but also provides a smooth and compact surface on the inside of the product. This is especially of interest in products which are containers for certain critical liquids. For optimal control of the blowing process it is necessary to integrate blowing valve blocks into the system. The individually developed blowing pins allow flushing of the product with chilled process air and assure optimal air exchange even in critical areas of the blown part. The CAC DryWater does not need oil free compressed air and operates with a reserve capacity of around 2 litres.

A reference system at a customer proved to be highly economical

With the DryWater process Fasti was able to show at a customer the production increase inherent in the system. A mould for a 40 litre gasoline tank with 6 layers for the automotive industry was equipped with the CAC DryWater. In the conventional process the cooling time for this part, which had a gross weight of 13.000 g, was 95 seconds. A temperature laser showed the exact temperature at the time of de-moulding. Without DryWater the temperature remained at +85C, while saturated steam cooled the product down to +71ºC. The calculated removal of heat was in the range of 20 kW. Result: the cooling time was reduced by 17% (16 seconds) to a mere 79 seconds. The resulting production increase (considering cooling and mechanical time) in this particular product was 17%.

The development phase at Fasti has been completed

Bernhard Stipsits, General Manager of Fasti, oversaw the development of DryWater for the last three years and is now convinced of the capability of the new cooling system in actual production. “The process combined with the CAC-unit can effectively influence the cooling times. The high surface quality and the fact that we work with “dry water” eliminates the need for after treatment. Depending on application and product our customers may assume a very short amortisation period of 1 month to maximum one year DryWater pays for itself in a very short time”. This new approach to cooling has been secured by Fasti with a EU-patent. DryWater can be installed on practically all blow moulding machines. Specially designed blowing valve blocks effectively control the process air respectively the blowing process. The CAC-compressed air chillers are available in air flow volumes of 120 up to 720 Nm3/h (nominal air flow) depending on the size of the blown product. These systems, as is usual at Fasti, use remarkably little energy and operate virtually maintenance-free. At the initial or at subsequent installations Fasti will assist its customers in any possible way especially in the area of most efficient application. Extrusion blow moulding has reached another dimension with the DryWater system.

More Power for the ERD Xpert

FASTI launches the new power-module for operation with
it’s resin drier series ERD Xpert

(May, 19th 2004)

FFASTI GmbH, Kufstein/Austria: FASTI – the pioneer for drying resin with compressed air, consequently adapts it’s modular resin drier series ERD Xpert (the new series has been successfully launched on FAKUMA 2003) to the individual requirements of the plastics processing industry. The new power-module („FASTI Power-Pilot“) which has been designed for operation with the Xpert hopper series , will be launched on MEDIA-TECH-EXPO 2004/Frankfurt. It will fit the demand for compact and reliable drier, which can be directly mounted on the machine throat, combined with high material throughputs. One of the main areas of application will be drying Polycarbonat for the production of optical items such as CD’s and DVD’s.

Due to the use of modular components known form the Xpert series, design and dimensions of the new „Power-Pilot“ doesn’t differ from the standard module. The power module is equipped with a special tuned power electronic, which enabels, if required, to increase the process-air volume up to 300%. That means significant higher material throughput at same (standard-) hopper dimensions. The new module is available for hopper sizes up from 42 liters.

Identically to all resin drier of the ERD series, the „Power-Pilot“ uses pre-dried compressed air from the customers air system to provide dry process air with a low dew point for the drying process. Due to a central quick connector („FASTI Clip-On-Technology“) the module can be simply fixed or released from the hopper within seconds and with one hand. In addition the „FASTI Hopper-Recognition-System“ automatically sets all necessary parameters for the drying process.

The integrated multifunction controller (MFC 3000) ensures easy and convenient handling of the dryer. The drying system includes a steady and automatic power and air consumption control (electronic) and standard interfaces such as RS 485, RS 232, TTY, Can-Bus for easy integration into all major machine types. Further standards: Drying time monitoring, weekly timer program, mode for batch drying, and integrated conveying and emptying control. Optional features such as a modem output for remote maintenance or software updates and a dew point sensor, which can be easily retofitted, complete the list of features. A 3 year warranty is standard for all drier of the ERD series!

Start of FASTI's brand new drier series
ERD Micro and ERD Xpert

(March, 15th 2004)

FASTI FASTI GmbH, Austria: FASTI - the pioneer for drying resin with compressed air, has successfully started it's brand new resin driers ERD Micro and ERD Xpert. Almost 10 years after market introduction of the first compact resin dryer working with compressed air, FASTI‘s ERD-Compressed Air Technology has demonstrated to dry resin in a very economic and efficient way. Now the range of resin dryer has been enhanced and expanded. Thus FASTI’s compressed air driers range from 0,5 to 3.500 liters hopper volume. Special versions for drying sensitive Polycarbonat (PC) and clean room applications are also available.

The new ERD Xpert (the prototype of the new dryer series has been launched on FAKUMA 2003, Friedrichshafen/Germany) has founded a new generation of compact compressed air resin driers made by FASTI. As well as all resin driers designed by FASTI, the ERD Xpert (and ERD Micro) uses pre-dried compressed air from the customers air system, which is expanded to atmospheric pressure. Thus the dew point of the process air sinks to a low level (if required process air with a dew point of -65°C can be produced). Subsequent heating of the process air reduces the relative humidity and guarantees perfect and continuous drying results at low operation costs and virtually no maintenance.

Using a completely modular basic structure and FASTI‘s “Clip-on-Technology“ the new product design („Pilot-Design“) reflects the consequent separation of drying hopper and control module („Pilot-Module“). Due to a central quick connector the module can be simply fixed or released within seconds and with one hand. The intelligent module is equipped with a modern easy to handle controller (MFC 3000) and a hopper recognition system which sets all drying parameters automatically after switching the module. This enables fast and easy maintenance and handling for maximum operational safety.

The new multifunction controller (which is also used in the ERD Micro) is based on a flexible electronic basic structure, which means virtually no limits for individual requirements and assures a convenient and efficient workflow of the dryer. The drying system also includes a steady and automatic power and air consumption control (electronic) and standard interfaces such as RS 485, RS 232, TTY, Can-Bus for easy integration into all major machine types. Further standards: Modem output for remote maintenance or software updates, a dew point display with optional dew point sensor and a wide range of system accessories. A 3 year warranty is standard!

The ERD Micro completes the range of FASTI‘s ERD compressed air driers. With hopper sizes from 0,5 to 3 liters (hopper out of double walled glass) the ERD Micro has been developed especially for the production of very small parts and components (micro injection molding) and fits the growing demand for compact and light weight resin driers for low capacities. Due to it’s modular design the module („Pilot“) can be mounted separately from the hopper at virtually any place on the injection molding machine (e.g. if there is less space for the drying unit).

Similar to the ERD Xpert the ERD Micro is equipped with an integrated multifunction controller, which provides all necessary operating data at any time. Features such as drying time monitoring, weekly timer program or integrated hopper loader control are standard. A special designed Micro-Airjet hopper loader (Venturi) automatically provides the dryer with resin.

The new ERD Micro

(October, 14th 2003)

FASTI GmbH, Austria: Fasti - the pioneer for drying resin with compressed air, presents it's brand new resin driers ERD Xpert and ERD Micro on the Fakuma show 2003 in Friedrichshafen/Germany. In addition to the ERD Xpert, which will follow the ERD Baby Series, the new ERD Micro is launched. The ERD Micro completes the range of FASTI's ERD compressed air driers and will fit the growing demand for compact and light weight resin driers for low capacities.

The ERD Micro was especially designed to dry hygroscopic resins for the production of very small parts and is, similar to the ERD Xpert, based on the ERD compressed air technology and a modular and flexible design (pilot-design). The new FASTI pilot-design reflects the consequent separation of drying hopper and control module (pilot-module). The drying hopper is made out of double wall glass and hopper sizes range from 1 to 3 liter (smaller sizes on request). If required (e.g. less space for the drying unit) the module can be mounted separately form the hopper at virtually any place on the injection molding machine.

The module is equipped with an integrated multifunction controller, which provides all necessary operating data at any time. Features such as drying time monitoring, weekly timer program or integrated hopper loader control are standard. A special designed FASTI Airjet hopper loader (Venturi) automatically provides the dryer with resin.

The new ERD Xpert

(September, 29th 2003)

FASTI GmbH, Austria: Almost 10 years after the successful market-introduction of the compact and well known compressed air dryer ERD-Baby, the ERD Technology has demonstrated to dry resin in a very economic and efficient way. Now FASTI presents it's brand new follow-up model at the Fakuma-Show 2003, in Friedrichshafen, Germany.

The ERD Xpert will start the new generation of compact compressed air resin dryers, by FASTI, using a completely modular basic structure and the new FASTI “Clip-on”-Technology. The new product design reflects the consequent separation of drying hopper (new hopper sizes from 7 to 152 liter) and control module. Due to a quick connector the module can be fixed or released within seconds and with one hand. The intelligent module (FASTI “Pilot”-Module) is equipped with a hopper recognition system which sets all drying parameters automatically after switching the module and enables fast and easy maintenance.

The new multifunction controller is based on a flexible electronic basic structure, which has virtually no limits for individual requirements and assures a convenient and efficient workflow of the dryer. The standard version of the ERD Xpert also includes a steady and automatic power and air consumption control and standard interfaces such as RS 485, RS 232, TTY, Can-Bus for easy integration into all major machine types. Further standards: Integrated product database, modem output for remote maintenance or software updates and a dew point display.

Detail modifications have also been made on the approved ERD compressed air technology. A new design of the air inlet pipe now ensures an even more consistent temperature distribution within the hopper and shorter drying times.
